An Open Letter to My Fellow Geeks, Gamers, and Dreamers

Fellow fans of Escapist Fiction,

This one’s for all of you who have ever rolled a natural 20 to save the party. For the ones who stayed up all night grinding for that one legendary drop. For the readers, the builders, the crafters of worlds in your minds. For the fans who have cheered as heroes stood their ground against impossible odds, for the creators who dared to dream up better futures, and for the escapists who know that sometimes the best way to face reality is by first imagining another way.

We’ve all grown up with larger-than-life heroes, haven’t we? We’ve seen this story play out a thousand times. The world is in peril. The downtrodden are suffering. The villains are in control, arrogant, corrupt, untouchable. And the call goes out. The heroes rise. They make sacrifices. They face impossible odds. And, against all expectation, they win.

But you and I know where this story really starts: with the call to action. That’s where we are now. Right here, right now.

You’ve read this plot before. You’ve played this campaign. You know what happens if the call is ignored. If the people give in to fear, apathy, or despair. The villains tighten their grip. The world falls further into darkness. But that doesn’t have to be where this story ends.

We now live under the thumb of corrupt authoritarians and extremists. Religious zealots dictating laws. Politicians in their golden towers looking down on a suffering populace. It’s not fiction anymore. This is real life, and it’s on us, the readers, the gamers, the dreamers, to answer the call.

We’ve all dreamed of a future like Star Trek, where justice and equality reign, but we’re barreling toward Dune, with a God Emperor Harkonnen on the throne. We are so close to losing what little light we have left. But if you’ve read Campbell, if you know your hero’s journey, then you know this is the moment that defines the story. The call to action is clear.

So I have to ask you, what was the point of rooting for Luke Skywalker if you’re just going to submit to the Empire? What’s the point of idolizing Indiana Jones if you’re not willing to punch a Nazi? All those stories you’ve loved, all those lessons you’ve learned from them, this is where they matter. This is the moment they were preparing you for.

You already know who the villains are. They’re the ones waving the red flags, spreading hate, hoarding power, crushing anyone who dares to stand against them. You know what happens when people turn away and pretend they don’t see. You’ve seen it in every book, every movie, every game.

But here’s the good news: in this story, there are more of us than there are of them. We have the numbers. We have the passion. And we have something they’ll never understand: the belief that one person can make a difference, and that together, we can change everything.

So let’s not waste the lessons we’ve learned from our favorite stories. Let’s be the heroes we’ve always admired. Let’s show the world that we understand the moral of the story.

Because when the horn of Gondor blows, you don’t stay home. You answer the call.

Yours in the fight,

R.L. Lawrence
